Water Balloons as a Reward
Take hundreds of water balloons, add elementary students plus one principal and what do you get? A great reward for a successful fundraiser. Students at Emerson Elementary had a chance to throw a water balloon at their principal, Ken Jones, as a reward for collecting nearly $22,000 during a recent PTA fundraiser. Teachers could also take a shot for $5 each. Although he was outfitted with a rain suit, Mr. Jones ended up water logged and sloshing back to his office after an hour of dodging balloons.

GPS In SLC Classrooms
On September 18, ten educators from our District completed the Basic GPS Part 1 workshop. Participants discovered answers to the questions above, while having fun navigating to specific EarthCache coordinates called waypoints. We asked teachers how they would use GPS units with their students, and one teacher shared that, “One of the inspiring things about using GPS with students is that it forces you to think outside of the classroom and to use practical, real-life, hands-on projects.” The following lessons were also discussed during the class; GPS Logic Challenge, Observations of Seasonal Changes around our School using GPS, and GPS Tracks & Geometric Shapes.

Change a Light, Change the World Day
Just how much difference can changing one light bulb make? Assistant Secretary from the U.S. Department of Energy Kevin Kolevar told Wasatch Elementary students if every house in the United States replaced one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent (CFL) bulb, it would save enough electricity to power the state of Utah for two years. Kolevar and representatives from the Utah Governor's Office and Utah Clean Energy visited Wasatch Elementary on Change a Light, Change the World Day to explain the benefits of switching to CFLs.

New AYP Reports Show Progress Made in Salt Lake City Schools
A detailed look at the 2006-07 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports reveals many Salt Lake City Schools are making progress in their goal of increasing student achievement. As required by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, accountability standards have been raised this past year, resulting in more schools not making AYP statewide. However, in Salt Lake City School District, the number of schools making AYP has remained steady.

Welcome Back
Teachers and their attitudes are the key factors in determining success in their classrooms. That was the main focus of Superintendent McKell Withers’ message during last week’s Welcome Back. Dr. Withers illustrated this point by highlighting a group of 25 students who, over the past five years, have overcome traditional educational stumbling blocks. Each student relied on an adult – teacher, parent, or other family member – for motivation to make it through tough times.
Welcome Back is an annual event designed to kick start the new school year. Employees are invited to attend the morning session, where they hear brief messages from the Salt Lake City Board of Education and the superintendent. The rest of the day is filled with professional development classes where teachers and administrators can hone their skills and learn about important policy changes that could affect their students.
