Music in the Parks

At the recent Lagoon Music in the Parks competition, Hillside Middle School's orchestra won first place with a Superior rating and also won overall for all orchestras. Congratulations!

Science and Engineering Fair Winner

West High School student Ema Parker won fourth place in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering category at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair. She also won a trip to Geneva, Switzerland to visit CERN and the Large Hadron Collider. Congratulations Ema!

The Utah State Office of Education today announced the winners of the inaugural Sorenson Legacy Awards for Excellence in Arts Education. Among the winners were three Salt Lake City School District educators. Congratulations to Hilary Carrier, Budge Porritt, and Patrick Eddington!

Registration is OPEN for Summer Kindergarten Readiness

Registration is currently open through June 14, 2013, for Summer Kindergarten Readiness at Bennion, Lincoln, Mountain View, and Rose Park Elementary Schools. This program is tuition-based ($50.00 total per child) and enrollment is limited. Participants must be five years old by September 1, 2013.

Classes begin on June 10, 2013, and end on July 11, 2013.

Nibley Park Community Garden

Nibley Park K-8 School students got their hands dirty today as they helped set up the school's community garden. The garden will be available for community use but will also be used for hands-on science lessons for students.

A Fresh Look for our High Schools

After spending more than a year working on this project, we are proud to announce a fresh look for our three comprehensive high schools – East, Highland, and West. Parents, students, teachers, and administrators have met over the past year to refresh the high school websites, mascots, and logos. The results are stunning and reflect the strong traditions and history at each school. At the same time, the new logos and mascots are designed for easy use in today's digital world.

Grow Anywhere Tour At Escalante

More than 1,000 pounds of produce and 500 vegetable plants were delivered to students, families, and community members when the Burpee Home Gardens "Grow Anywhere Tour" stopped at Escalante Elementary School.

Joanne Brings, a teacher at Bryant Middle School, was excited to learn this week that she has won a Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education. The award was a surprise to Brings and was announced in a school assembly.

Opera In Schools

Uintah Elementary School students participated in a live video chat with Mezzo-Soprano Alice Coote this past week. Ms. Coote will be singing in the upcoming MetOpera Live in HD production of Giulio Cesare, which select Salt Lake City School students have the opportunity to see. Uintah students participated with four other schools around the country in asking Ms. Coote questions about being an opera singer and aspects of being in an opera.

Team Reading Progress Awards

Grade-level teams of teachers were honored today for their work. Using DIBELS testing data, these teams were selected because their students showed the highest growth in reading. They were treated to Afternoon Tea at The Grand America Hotel. The Grand America is the district's partner for our data-driven teacher recognition program.

Highland High Drama Winners

Highland High School placed 3rd in the 4A State Drama Competition! Students took 2nd place in the one-act play with Hannah Foster winning Best Actress. Kali Scott Placed 2nd in Dramatic Monologues, with Harrison Lind and Zoe Smoot placing third in Classical Scenes.
